Boardman Makers
Making is essential in developing whole humans.
Advisor: Mr. Harker
Makerspaces, hackerspaces, or fablabs promote invention, creation, tinkering, exploration, design, discovering and learning using various tools, craft materials, recycled materials, electronics, hardware supplies, and more. The engineering process is discussed and put into action.
Students...
-
are at the center of their learning.
-
take on problems that mean something to them and think deeply about those problems.
-
learn from playing and doing instead of a rigid agenda. The focus is on making rather than consuming.
-
and teachers promote a community/collaborative learning environment and come together to design and discover.
Makerspace sessions can take on different forms for members.
-
One form is a design challenge. Students work during a timed session to complete a task. For example, using the following materials, design a device that can entertain a small child on a long travel day.
-
Another form involves an ongoing creation or project. Students work on an ongoing project that interests them. It might be an invention they are developing or just creating an object or device that sparked their interest. They have access to the tools and materials in the lab and are guided by the instructor(s) there.
