Boardman Beats GlenOak 14-5
The Spartans opened up their final home game against the Golden Eagles of GlenOak. Boardman jumped out to a halftime lead of 9-3 and controlled the rest of the game to win 14 to 5. A huge part of controlling the game came from Senior Ava Gaps winning 10 draws on the night to set the pace for the offense. The Spartans attackers were also led by Ava Gaps with 6 goals, Lydia Kenney with 3 goals, Val Hoysack 2 goals, Pickles Vondran 1 goal, Giavanna Kelmer 1 goal and Sophia Testa with 1 goal.
Boardman defense also played a big role in the win for the Spartans. Loose ball control and quick passes help the defense keep GlenOak away. The Spartans were led on loose ball control by Ava Gaps with 6, Anna Bowes 3, Pickles Vondran 3, Harlow Kolesar 3, Suri Stevens 2, Jemma Pavone 2 and Madison Whyde with 1. The Spartans goalie Catherine Lorenzi also had 6 saves on the night to help solidify the win. Boardman will next travel to Canfield Wednesday night to start the playoffs.

The JV Baseball Team traveled to AAC foe Howland and came out of the wrong end of a 5-4 ballgame.
Aiden McVeigh got the start and pitched 4 innings, giving up three unearned runs while striking out two. Jimmy Putko pitched the final 2 innings, giving up one earned run.
On the offensive end, the Spartans struggled as they could only muster 3 hits. Putko and Andrew Lindeman led the way with a hit and RBI each. Coben Scarsella added the final hit. Marco Trafficante, Justin Beish, and Anthony Ramunno each scored and Logan Miller had an RBI.

The Boardman Varsity Baseball team returned to AAC action and unfortunately fell in extras to the Howland Tigers by a score of 6-2 in 8 innings.

Hudson-The Boardman Spartans traveled to The Hudson Grand Prix last Friday and placed third overall, narrowly behind Canton GlenOak and host Hudson.
Junior Stephan Stanford placed first overall in the 110H with a personal best time of 15.66, he was followed by classmate Ryan Mitchell in third with a career-best time of 16.20. Junior Robrick Taylor placed second in the 200 with classmate Abdelaziz Hadidan in eighth. Stanford was second in the 300H with junior Jackson Graham in fifth. Senior Adam Nigro placed second in the 800. Sophomore Jacob Turek placed third in the 1600 with a new personal best time of 4:26, he was followed by junior Jonathan Burgos-Perez in sixth. Senior Dominic Theodore placed first in the 3200 with a new career-best time of 10:01. The Spartan 4x100 Relay Team of Mitchell, Graham, and seniors Blake Daniels and Jerry Smith placed sixth. The 4x200 Relay Team of Taylor, Mitchell, Hadidan, and senior Connor Boots placed sixth. Finally, the Spartan 4x800 Relay Team of Nigro, Burgos-Perez, and juniors Tommy Sullivan and Dylan White set a new Hudson Stadium Record time at 8:15 while placing first.
In the field events, junior Khaled Mohammed placed first in the Discus. Daniels placed fourth in the High Jump. Smith placed eighth in the Long Jump with a new personal best leap of 19’5.5”. Junior Brandon Shaw placed fifth in the Shot Put with a new career-best throw of 50’4.5” and senior James Mitchell was seventh. Pole Vault was not contested due to weather conditions.

Boardman played Lake tough through 2 quarters at Spartan Stadium but had a rough 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter the Spartans began to play catch up but unfortunately time was not on their side. Boardman ended up losing to Lake 11-18. Even though the game did not go their way it was still a great evening because they got to celebrate Senior Night.

The Boardman Glenwood girls track team turned in another strong performance Friday night at the Final Feather Invitational, finishing second out of 10 teams with 104 points. Louisville captured the team title with 137 points.
Boardman was led by standout performances from Alexa Duble, who won the 200-meter hurdles and added runner-up finishes in the 100 meters and third place in the 200 meters. Addyson Rodriguez also contributed valuable sprint points with a third-place finish in the 100 and fourth in the 200.
In the hurdles, Kennedy Massey placed second in the 100-meter hurdles while Maggie Benson earned third place. Benson also added points in the field events with a third-place finish in the long jump, while Gabi Ball also placed third in the event.
The Spartans received a major boost in the throwing events from Vanessa Torres, who captured first place in the shot put and added a fourth-place finish in discus.
Boardman’s distance runners also contributed important points throughout the meet. Abby Marks finished fifth in the 800 meters and sixth in the 1600, while Ryle Stellato took seventh in the 800 and Zara Harlan placed eighth in the mile.
The 4x800 relay team of Ryle Stellato, Oliyah Cuevas, Zara Harlan, and Riley Pavone earned a runner-up finish, and the Spartans also scored points in the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400 relays to help secure the team’s second-place overall finish.
On the boys side, they earned a strong third-place finish Friday night at the Final Feather Invitational, scoring 88 points against a competitive 10-team field. Steubenville claimed the team championship with 102 points, while Austintown finished second with 91.

The 4x800 relay team of Nolan Cordon, Ury Doyle, Jonah Gluck, and Jake McGee added a third-place performance. Boardman also picked up additional points in both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Boardman Softball Extends Winning Streak to Four with 7-5 Victory Over West Branch
Boardman extended its winning streak to four games on Saturday as the Spartans hosted West Branch for the second meeting between the two teams this season. Boardman had won the first matchup 15-5, and the Spartans once again came away victorious with a 7-5 win.
Boardman was powered offensively by the middle of its lineup throughout the afternoon.
The Spartans found themselves trailing 1-0 after the top of the first inning as the Warriors collected three hits early. However, starting pitcher Addie Kowacich quickly settled in and kept West Branch in check the rest of the way.
Boardman answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Ellie Wymer drew a walk, while Jocelynn Torres and Addie Rudge both reached on errors. Kowacich then ripped a single down the right field line to score two runs. Rudge later crossed the plate on a wild pitch to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead after one inning.
West Branch responded in the top of the third inning. Despite not hitting a ball out of the infield, the Warriors capitalized on a few Spartan miscues to plate an unearned run and cut the deficit to 3-2.
Boardman wasted little time responding. Rudge and Kowacich opened the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back singles. The Spartans then successfully executed a double steal, and an errant throw to third allowed Rudge to score. Later in the inning, Gabi Sferra delivered a clutch single to center field to drive in another run and extend the lead to 5-2.
The Spartans added insurance in the fourth inning. Singles by Torres and Rudge set the table for Kowacich, who reached on a fielder’s choice. Aggressive baserunning by Boardman allowed another run to score on the play. Kate Thames followed with a single to plate another run and push the Spartans’ lead to 7-2.
West Branch was able to push across three runs over the final two innings, but the Spartans closed the door to secure the victory.
Kowacich earned the win in the circle for Boardman, pitching 6 1/3 innings while allowing four earned runs and striking out five. Sferra entered in the seventh inning with one out and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to earn the save.
Offensively, Emily Swantek, Sferra, Thames, Torres, and Wymer each contributed one hit. Rudge and Kowacich both added two-hit performances, while Kowacich drove in three runs.
Boardman returns to action during the final week of the regular season when the Spartans host Howland on Monday.

Olivia Brady was the meet champion in the 800 (2:22.94) and the 1600 (5:18.95).
Lili Ison was the shot put champion posting a mark of 34' 10".
Bringing home silver medals were: Gwen McLane in the shotput and Julia Forbes in the discus.
Bringing home bronze medals were: Gigi Angiuli in the 300 hurdles and Kealia Bravo in the 800.
Scoring 4th place points were: Gigi Angiuli in the 100 hurdles, Bryanna James in the 200, Haley Bero in the 3200 and the 4x100 relay of Alena Scott, Bryanna James, Jasmine Matthews and Gigi Angiuli.
Scoring 5th place points was the 4x200 relay of Alena Scott, Bryanna James, Jasmine Matthews and Ava Gaps.
Scoring 6th place points was the 4x800 relay of Moriah Doyle, Mia Duble, Jaelyn Cicchillo and Jordan Lacivita.
Scoring 7th place points was Ava Gaps in the 400.
Rounding out the scoring with an 8th place finish was Jasmine Matthews.
The Lady Spartans return to action on Wedneday, May 13th at the AAC Championship in Austintown.

Pioneers Top Spartans 14-6
The Boys Varsity lacrosse team fell to the Revere Pioneers 14-6 Saturday afternoon. Chase Zelesnak would break the game open with a quick goal to open the game in less than a minute giving the Spartans a quick 1-0 lead. Revere would have a strong response scoring the next six goals to end the first period 6-1. The defense would settle in and only give up two goals in the second quarter and Luke DeJoseph would find the net with just :33 seconds left in the half to give Boardman some momentum. Revere would come out strong in the third quarter again scoring six more until Liam Moore took the ball in for a quick score right at the end of the quarter to make it 14-3. The defense would shut out the Pioneers in the 4th quarter and the offense wouldn’t quit. Kyle Congson and Daniel Ramovs would find the net in the fourth and Zelesnak would assist DeJoseph on his 100th career goal. Goalie Lane Schubert would have a busy day with 10 saves. Mikey Montgomery would go 14 for 21 on faceoffs while leading the team in ground balls with teammate Finn Schubert having 5 each. Defensemen Michael Sosnowski and Toby Sofran would contribute as well, having 4 and 3 respectively.
The team will travel to Avon on Wednesday for their first round of the OHSAA playoffs.

Boardman Softball Tames Twinsburg Tigers in 12-2 Victory
Boardman’s bats have been red hot as the Spartans continue to build momentum heading toward another postseason run. On Thursday, they welcomed a talented Twinsburg squad to town and wasted no time taking control in a commanding 12-2 win.
The Lady Spartans opened the scoring in the first inning with an offensive explosion. Mikayla Rivera started the rally with a single, followed by another base hit from Addie Rudge. That set the stage for Addie Kowacich, who launched a towering three-run home run over the fence in right field — her third homer of the season — to give Boardman an early 3-0 advantage.
The Spartans kept the pressure on from there. Kate Thames worked a walk and Jocelynn Torres was hit by a pitch before Gabi Sferra ripped a double down the right field line to score Thames. Torres and Sferra later came around to score on passed balls as Boardman extended the lead to 6-0 after one inning.
Boardman continued to add on in the second inning. Rudge and Thames both doubled, helping the Spartans tack on another run and maintain the offensive momentum.
The Spartans broke the game open in the third inning with five more runs. Ellie Wymer reached on an error to start the frame, and with two outs, the Spartans’ lineup came alive again. Rudge singled home Wymer before Kowacich added another hit. Rudge and Kowacich both scored on wild pitches, while Thames and Torres each drew walks. Sferra delivered again, drilling her second double of the game to drive in two more runs.
Boardman’s offense was paced by Rudge, who went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Kowacich and Sferra each finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs apiece, while Rivera added a 2-for-4 performance. Thames, Torres, and Lanie Joyce each drew two walks as the Spartans totaled 10 hits and 12 runs on the afternoon.
Sferra also shined in the circle, pitching five innings while allowing just three hits and two runs. She struck out nine batters in the victory.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 13-7 on the season as they head into the final week of the regular season.

Patrick Young got the start and earned the win, going the full 5 innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out three.

Logan Miller added a hit and 2 runs, Marco Trafficante scored 2 runs, and Ben Breese and Young each added a hit. Zac Caldwell and Sal Ianazone each added an RBI.
The JV Spartans improve to 6-9 and will look to continue their winning streak when they host West Branch tomorrow.

Boys LAX Bounces Back to Dominate Southeast
The boys Varsity Lacrosse team bounced back from Tuesday's tough loss to shut out the Southeast Pirates 18-0. Junior captain Chase Zelesnak would get things going early with 2 goals and 2 assists in the first four minutes. His first goal was unassisted while his second goal was from senior captain CJ Rice. Zelesnak’s assists would go to teammate and senior captain Luke DeJoseph while the other would be to junior teammate Daniel Ramovs. It would be hard to stop the offense as 8 different Spartans would score. Zelesnak and DeJoseph would lead the team with four goals apiece and Zelesnak would add 3 assists on the night as well. Rice would complete the hat trick with 3 pole goals and Ramovs and Kyle Congson would add 2 each. Rounding out the scoring was Tanner Dravecky, Liam Moore and Tyler Holcomb with one goal each. Not to be outdone, the defense posted the shoutout behind the combined effort of Lane Schubert and Sean Myers. Mikey Montgomery would dominate the midline going 12 for 15 on faceoffs. Moore would get some action at faceoff as well going 4 for 5. Montgomery would lead the team in ground balls as well with 9 while teammate CJ Rice would be close behind with 6. It was a true team effort as the entire team would get in, keep the pressure on the offensive side and secure the shutout.
The boys will be back in action at home vs. Revere on Saturday for their Military Appreciation Game.
Tonight, we celebrated one of the most meaningful traditions of the season — Boardman Softball’s Teacher Appreciation Night.
This special evening was dedicated to honoring the educators who inspire, support, and guide our student-athletes both on and off the field. The same character, perseverance, and teamwork we see during every game are often first developed in the classroom through the care and dedication of our teachers.

Both JV and Varsity Fall short to Roosevelt
JV Boardman 6 Roosevelt 10/ Varsity Boardman 7 Roosevelt 17
The Boardman Girls JV Lacrosse team put up a spirited fight tonight, ultimately falling to Kent Roosevelt with a final score of 6-10. The Spartans' offense was a true team effort, featuring goals from Harlow Kolesar, Adelynne Ganser, Korinne Hernon, Suri Stevens and Giavanna Kalmer. To keep the pressure on, Olivia Cuveas and Suri Stephens each battled for two crucial draw controls that helped drive the ball into the offensive zone.
Defensively, Giavanna Kalmer showed great hustle by securing two key ground ball controls to win back possession for the Spartans. Both Maddie Whyde and Vic Donaldson would step in and help the JV's defense take a stand. In the goal Audrey Lorenzi had nine impressive saves to keep the team competitive throughout the match. Although they didn't get the win tonight, the girls displayed good teamwork from start to finish.
The Spartan Varsity had an off and then on again quarters against the Rough Riders of Kent falling 7-17. Boardman had trouble in the first 2 halves cleaning up ground balls and getting the ball on the offensive side. Once Boardman settled down, Lydia Kenney took matters in her own hands and scored 6 goals along with Val Hoysack adding one. Carly Albanese started and finished the game at the Center position gathering a career high 8 draws on the night.
Boardman's defense came around in the second half with only allowing Kent Roosevelt to score 4 points. The Spartan leaders for ground balls were Anna Bowes, Suri Stevens, Korrinne Hernon, Pickles Vondran and Jaycey Bogerd. Boardman was missing a few key players but the other girls that subbed in were a bright spot with a good looking future ahead. The Spartans look to rebound against Canfield tonight.

Austintown-For the second time in the last three years, the Boardman Spartans were crowned Mahoning County Champions following a rain-shortened first place finish this past Tuesday at Austintown.
The Spartans opened the meet by placing first in the 4x800 relay with the team of senior Adam Nigro, senior Chase Moore, junior Tommy Sullivan, and sophomore Donovan Simione. Junior Ethan Timblin placed third in the 110H with classmate Stephan Stanford in fourth.
Junior Dylan White placed second in the 1600 with classmate Jonathan Burgos-Perez in fourth. The Spartan 4x100 Relay Team of senior Kevin Tomlin, senior Jerry Smith, senior Blake Daniels, and junior Frank Butto placed seventh. In the 400 meter dash, junior Robrick Taylor placed third. Timblin placed 2nd and Stanford took 3rd in the 300H. Nigro placed first in the 800 with Sullivan in fourth.
The field events saw Smith place fifth in the Long Jump. Junior Khaled Mohammed placed third in Discus with senior Ahmed Mohammed in fifth. Senior Dominic Theodore placed second in the Pole Vault and freshman Ezekiel Doyle tied for third place.
Due to weather, the 200, 3200, 4x400, and Shot Put were not contested.

The boys Varsity lacrosse team lost a heartbreaking game to Canfield in overtime 7-6. It would be a back and forth game all night as it seemed every time one team scored, the other would answer. Luke DeJoseph would start off the scoring and keep the game close scoring two of his four goals in the first quarter to keep the Spartans within one goal. Daniel Ramovs provided DeJoseph with an assist in the first before getting on the scoreboard himself, with one of his two goals in the game. That goal would bring the score even before Canfield added one to go into the half 4-3. DeJoseph would tie it up in the third before Canfield would retake the lead again 5-4. With a ball destined to go out of bounds, Ryan Smith made a highlight save that was scooped up by Ramovs who took it the distance to tie the game at 5 going into the 4th quarter. DeJoseph would score the lone goal in the fourth to send the game into overtime before Canfield hit a man-up shot with just :37 seconds left in the overtime period for the win. Defensively, goalie Lane Schubert would come up with 7 saves and a great night of clear passing while teammate and brother Finn Schubert would lead the team in ground balls with 5.
The team will play their final home game against Revere on Saturday.
