Girls Golf Shows Improvement in Match Against West Branch
The Boardman Spartans girls golf team battled West Branch in a competitive match, falling 199–190.
While the Spartans came up just short on the scoreboard, the team showed significant improvement from its previous matchup against West Branch. Boardman finished just nine strokes behind West Branch this time, a strong improvement from the 40-stroke margin in their previous meeting, when the Spartans fell 230–190.
Boardman also had several individual highlights to celebrate. Senior Gianna Ross turned in an impressive round that included an eagle and a birdie, showcasing her ability to make big plays on the course.
Freshman Sylvie Chmielewski also continued to make strides, posting a 50 — her lowest score of the season so far. Her continued improvement is a positive sign for the Spartans as the season progresses.
The Spartans will look to build on their progress and continue improving as they move forward in the season.

The Freshman Volleyball returned to action as they hosted a tough Crestview team and fell in two sets, 15-25 and 12-25.
Evvi McKee led the offense with 5 assists, 1 kill, and 5 digs. Leah Brown added 3 kills and 7 digs. Kailey Hughes added 4 digs and an ace. Leylani Matos added a kill, Evi Moore added a dig, and Angellys Castellano added a kill and 2 digs.

Boys Varsity Soccer
The Spartans traveled to North Canton Hoover to face off against an in-form Vikings team. The Vikings got off to a red hot start and scored 2 goals in 10 minutes. The Spartans finally got off the bus and fought off the viking onslaught. The contest would end 2-0 to the Vikings. Senior keeper Ben Kelso recorded 16 saves in an excellent display for the remaing 70 minutes. The Spartans' record falls to 1-3-1.

BGJHS Cross Country Boys Place 1st, Girls Place 2nd
On Tuesday evening at McDonald’s Woodland Park, the BGJHS Cross Country Teams opened up Suburban League action in impressive fashion. The Boys’ Team finished in first place overall, and the Girls’ Team took second place. The top seven runners for the Boys' Team were Ury Doyle (3rd), Ibrahem Mohmmned (8th), Grady Rowan (9th), Jacob Lape (10th), Ben Bruno (11th), Tony Micthell (14th) and Nathan Bero (17th). The top seven runners for the Girls' team were Willow Yanulaitis (6th), Savannah Thomas (14th), Ariella Gerchak (16th), Lydia Schaper (21st), Marilyn Evans (22nd), Selena Mallin (24th), and Allana Attenberger (26th).
After the meet, the Spartans were treated to some ice cream thanks to Don Riccitelli's ice cream spot in McDonald, The Village Creamery.

Boardman White 8th Grade Volleyball
The Boardman White 8th Grade Volleyball team continued its season with two matches during the week of August 24–27. After suffering a tough loss on the road Tuesday, the Spartans responded in a big way Thursday to earn their first victory of the season. Boardman now sits at 1-4 overall and continues to show improvement as the season moves forward.
On Tuesday, August 25, the Spartans traveled to Louisville searching for their first win of the season. Boardman battled throughout the match but ultimately fell to the Leopards in two sets. Audrey Bennett led the Spartans from the service line with three aces. Andie Gerald anchored the defensive effort with five digs, while Peirsyn Haywood and Stella Rea each contributed an ace, with Rea also adding a dig. Elyse Wallace provided a strong effort at the net with two kills and four digs, while Kylie Watts added two digs.
The Spartans responded on Thursday with a much-needed victory over Warren, turning the tide and putting together a strong performance. Bennett contributed three aces and three kills, while Denayja Carter also recorded three aces and three kills. Haywood added two kills, while Wallace had a dominant performance from the service line with an impressive 13 aces, along with a kill.
With Thursday's victory, the Boardman White 8th Grade Volleyball team improved to 1-4 on the season. The Spartans will look to continue building confidence and improving as they head into the new week. Boardman returns to action Monday when the Spartans travel to Austintown Blue.

Boardman White 7th Grade Volleyball
The Boardman White 7th Grade Volleyball team continued its season with two matches during the week of August 24–27. The Spartans showed tremendous fight on the road Tuesday before bouncing back Thursday to earn their first victory of the season. Boardman now sits at 1-4 overall and is gaining confidence as the season progresses.
On Tuesday, August 25, the Lady Spartans traveled to Louisville and battled the Leopards in a highly competitive three-set match. Boardman fought hard from start to finish, with Audrey Hoff leading the way with an impressive 10 aces, three kills, and six digs. Vernice Robinson contributed two aces and a kill, while Makenna Kashmer added two digs to help anchor the defense. Jordann Ray provided a spark offensively with two kills, while Alina Castellanos played an important role defensively with two digs.
The Spartans bounced back in a big way on Thursday, earning their first win of the season with a dominant two-set victory, 25-20 and 25-7 over Warren. Hoff turned in another outstanding performance from the service line, recording an incredible 17 aces while also adding three digs. Kashmer contributed three aces and two digs, while Robinson continued the Spartans' success with four aces. Skout Rice and Riley LaRocca each added an ace and a dig, while Ray contributed a dig to round out the defensive effort.
The Boardman White 7th Grade Volleyball team improved to 1-4 on the season and will look to carry the momentum from Thursday's impressive victory into the new week. The Spartans return to action Monday when they face Austintown Blue.

Boardman Maroon 8th Grade Volleyball
The Boardman Maroon 8th Grade Volleyball team continued its season with two matches during the week of August 24–27. The Spartans split the two contests, battling through a tough loss at Louisville before responding with an impressive victory over Austintown Red. Boardman now sits at 2-3 overall on the season.
On Tuesday, August 25, the Spartans traveled to Louisville to take on the Leopards. Boardman competed hard throughout the match but ultimately fell in two sets, 25-18 and 25-16. Mia Corey led the Spartans with eight points, five kills, one block, and one dig. Giuliana Ball contributed three aces, one point, six assists, and two kills, while Julianah DiDomenico added two points, an ace, an assist, three kills, and a dig. Nalyna Italiano served two aces and scored six points, while Reese Majors added three digs and a kill. Josey Fiddler contributed an ace, four points, and a dig. Maya Majors added an assist, while Alexa Duble recorded a dig.
The Spartans responded in a big way on Thursday, August 27, traveling to Austintown Red and earning an impressive 2-0 victory over the Falcons, 25-14 and 25-15. Boardman displayed tremendous grit, teamwork, and energy throughout the match. Corey dominated at the net with eight kills and a block while adding an ace, five points, and three digs. Ball helped direct the offense with an ace, four points, 12 assists, a kill, and a dig. DiDomenico contributed two aces, three points, a kill, and two digs, while Fiddler added two points, an assist, and an impressive six digs. Maya Majors and Duble each recorded three kills, with Duble also adding two digs. Majors contributed an ace, seven points, a kill, and two digs, while Italiano served three aces and added a point and a dig.
With the victory over Austintown Red, the Boardman Maroon 8th Grade Volleyball team improved to 2-3 on the season. The Spartans will look to carry the momentum from Thursday's strong performance into their next match as they return home on Monday, August 31, to take on the Howland Tigers.

Boardman Maroon 7th Grade Volleyball
The Boardman Maroon 7th Grade Volleyball team continued its season with two road matches during the week of August 24–27. The Spartans continued to compete hard and showed flashes of improvement as they work to find their first victory of the season.
On Tuesday, August 25, the Spartans traveled to Louisville to take on the Leopards. Boardman battled throughout the match but ultimately fell to Louisville in two sets. Gia Ball led the Spartans with four points, an ace, a kill, and a dig, while Ohana Dillard added two aces from the service line. The Spartans continued to gain valuable experience as they prepared for another road match later in the week.
On Thursday, Boardman traveled to Austintown Red and fell 2-0, dropping the Spartans' season record to 0-5. Ball once again led the way with an impressive performance, recording three aces, three points, five kills, and a dig. Lena Ross contributed two assists and a kill, while Annie Montgomery and Alivia Vukovich each added a dig. Gianna McKinnon also contributed a kill for the Spartans.
Although Boardman is still searching for its first win, the Maroon 7th Grade Volleyball team continues to show determination and growth with each match. The Spartans will look to build on their experience from the first two weeks of the season as they continue conference play and work toward getting into the win column.
Spartans Tennis Sweep Warren G. Harding, 5–0
The Boardman girls tennis team continued its strong season Tuesday with a dominant 5–0 victory over Warren G. Harding, improving the Spartans to 9–2 overall and 4–2 in the AAC.
Boardman controlled the match, dropping just three games across the five varsity matches while also turning in strong performances in the junior varsity.
First singles, Nina Sinchak set the tone for the Spartans with a commanding 6–0, 6–0 victory.
Second singles, Vasilija Crnjak
delivered another flawless performance at second singles, defeating her opponent 6–0, 6–0.
Third singles, Katie Moser continued the Spartans’ strong start with a 6–1, 6–0 win. Moser surrendered just one game in the opening set before closing out the second set without dropping a game.
The first doubles team of Reese Murray and Sveva Ceccarani also put together an impressive performance, defeating Harding 6–1, 6–1.
Kenzie Tobey and Sophia Testa second doubles team had another shutout defeating their opponents 6–0, 6–0.
With all five varsity courts going to the Spartans, Boardman secured the 5–0 team victory.
JV / Exhibition
Boardman’s JV players also took advantage of the opportunity to compete. Riley Zelesnak earned a 6–0 exhibition victory over Harding, adding another shutout to the afternoon.
In JV doubles, Reagan Ridgley and Chloe Raghanti teamed up, also earning a 6–0 victory, finishing the afternoon with a clean sweep.
Yesterday, the Spartans took on the Girard Indians at Girard and returned victorious after defeating Girard in 3 sets!
Offensively, the Spartans were led by Monica Matos with 9 kills! Next up, Kylee Vittori, Kat Rudiak, and Leylani Matos had 5 kills! Brooklyn Bailey added two kills. Rudiak and Vittori had 4 aces apiece! Rudiak and Bailey combined for a total of 23 assists!
Defensively, the Spartans were led by Vittori with 7 digs, followed by Leylani Matos with 3 digs. Kenzie Dugan-Boyer and Monica Matos each had two digs apiece.
The Spartans return to action Wednesday against Mooney and at Mooney with the first set starting at 5:30p.m.

The night was made even more special as Maya Flores reached an incredible milestone — 1,000 career kills! Maya dominated the match with 23 kills while adding 21 digs to her outstanding performance. Congratulations, Maya, on an incredible accomplishment!

Running the Spartan offense, Emma Terlesky recorded 15 assists and Gianna Commons added 18 assists, with both players contributing 7 digs apiece.
The Spartans were strong defensively as well, with Korinne Hernon recording 10 digs and 2 assists, while Xy'Asia Gilford added 4 digs.

Spartans Rally Past Warren JFK in Hard-Fought Varsity Match
The Boardman Spartans battled Warren JFK in a competitive varsity matchup, coming away with a 3-2 team victory after a pivotal finish at third singles.
At first singles, Nina Sinchak set the tone for the Spartans with a dominant performance, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
At second singles, Vasilija Crnjak fought hard but fell to her opponent 2-6, 1-6, bringing the overall match score closer.
In first doubles, Reese Murray and Stella Mitchell faced a tough challenge, falling 5-7, 1-6.
At second doubles, Kenzie Tobey and Sophia Testa came through with an important win, defeating their opponents 7-5, 6-1. After a tight opening set, the Spartans took control in the second, closing out the match decisively.
The pivotal match came at third singles, where Katie Moser delivered when the Spartans needed it most. Moser dropped a close first set 4-6, but battled back to take the second set 7-5. With the match tied at 2-2 in the third set, Moser’s opponent was forced to retire due to medical reasons. The retirement gave Boardman the match point and secured the Spartans’ overall victory.

Geneva: The Boardman Spartan Cross Country Team opened their season on Saturday, August 29th at The HOKA Kickoff Classic Invitational at Spire Institute in Geneva placing 24th overall out of 48 teams representing the top programs in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Leading the Spartans was senior Dylan White finishing 20th overall out of 664 varsity and junior varsity runners in a career-best time of 16:09. That time places White 18th all time in Boardman High School history. Finishing next for the Spartans was junior Jacob Turek in a time of 16:37 which placed him 42nd overall. He was followed by senior Tommy Sullivan in a time of 17:42 which was good enough for 159th place. Junior Donovan Simione was next up in 188th place in a time of 17:58, and freshman Austin Gillin in a time of 18:43 which placed him 284th.
Setting new career bests at Riverside were: White, sophomore Ezekiel Doyle at 20:58, sophomore Cooper Moore at 20:13, freshman Ian Congo at 21:31, Gillin, freshman Jonah Gluck at 22:19, freshman Robert Lape at 21:12, freshman Jacoby McGee at 20:21, and freshman Sebastian Morris at 26:24..
Next up for Boardman is the Wooster Invitational at Wooster High School on September 12th; the Spartans varsity will run at 9:00 am, and the JV at 10:05 am.

Rounding out the top seven for the team were Tony Micthell (17th) and Grayson Piper (28th).

Lady Spartans Open Season at HOKA Night XC Showcase
The Lady Spartan Cross Country team opened the 2026 season Saturday night at the HOKA Night XC Showcase at SPIRE Academy. Competing in a field of 51 teams and 396 runners, the Spartans finished 12th overall, putting together a strong showing against a highly competitive field that included teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
The HOKA Night XC Showcase provided an exciting start to the season! The race began at 10:10 p.m., with much of the course lit only by string lights along the course boundaries. Despite the darkness, the course was mostly flat and temperatures were favorable for racing.
Senior Olivia Brady led the Spartans with a 22nd-place finish in 19:15.89. Sophomore Kealia Bravo was next across the line, finishing 75th in 20:32.80. Freshman Abby Marks had an impressive high school debut, placing 108th in 20:57.37, while junior Haley Bero finished close behind in 111th with a time of 20:59.56. Junior Mia Duble, a first-year cross country runner, continued the strong showing by finishing 182nd in 21:55.02. Sophomore Matilda Mausteller placed 231st in 22:38.20, followed by fellow sophomore Jemma Pavone, who finished 259th in 23:05.58.
The Spartans also saw promising performances from three additional freshmen competing in their first high school cross country race. Rylie Pavone finished eighth among Spartan runners in 23:11.25, followed by Zara Harlan in ninth at 23:20.83 and Yahayra Tenecela in tenth at 23:30.32. The three freshmen finished within 20 seconds of one another, showing valuable depth for the Lady Spartans early in the season.
The Spartans brought 10 runners to the season opener (half of whom are first-year runners) and used the meet as an opportunity to get some early-season racing experience against a deep and talented field. Finishing 12th out of 51 teams was an encouraging start as the team prepares to bring its full roster to compete next weekend!
The Lady Spartans will return to action this Saturday, September 5, at Marlington’s Ashley White Invitational. The varsity race will begin at 9:00 a.m., with the open race scheduled for 10:00 a.m.

Junior Mia Duble, a first-year cross country runner, continued the strong showing by finishing 182nd in 21:55.02. Sophomore Matilda Mausteller placed 231st in 22:38.20, followed by fellow sophomore Jemma Pavone, who finished 259th in 23:05.58.
The Spartans also saw promising performances from three additional freshmen competing in their first high school cross country race. Rylie Pavone finished eighth among Spartan runners in 23:11.25, followed by Zara Harlan in ninth at 23:20.83 and Yahayra Tenecela in tenth at 23:30.32. The three freshmen finished within 20 seconds of one another, showing valuable depth for the Lady Spartans early in the season.
The Spartans brought 10 runners to the season opener (half of whom are first-year runners) and used the meet as an opportunity to get some early-season racing experience against a deep and talented field. Finishing 12th out of 51 teams was an encouraging start as the team prepares to bring its full roster to compete next weekend!
The Lady Spartans will return to action this Saturday, September 5, at Marlington’s Ashley White Invitational. The varsity race will begin at 9:00 a.m., with the open race scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
Boardman Girls Tennis vs. Louisville
The Spartans battled Louisville Thursday, ultimately falling 4-1 in a competitive match.
1st Singles — Nina Sinchak came out strong at 1st singles, earning Boardman’s lone varsity victory of the day with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 straight-set win.
2nd Singles — Vasilija Crnjak faced a tough opponent at 2nd singles, falling 0-6, 4-6. After a difficult first set, she battled back and made the second set much more competitive.
3rd Singles — Katie Moser put together one of the day’s biggest battles. After taking the first set 6-2, she dropped a close second set 5-7 before Louisville pulled away in the third, 3-6. Katie fought all the way through a hard-fought three-set match.
1st Doubles — Sveva Ceccarani & Reese Murray got off to a great start, taking the opening set 6-3. Louisville responded in the second and third sets, but the pair continued to battle before falling 2-6, 2-6.
2nd Doubles — Kenzie Tobey & Stella Mitchell had a back-and-forth opening set that went all the way to a tiebreak. Louisville took the tiebreak 7-3 before winning the second set 6-2. The Spartans fought hard throughout a competitive match.
JV Action:
Sophia Testa & Reagan Ridgley battled to a 4-6 finish.
Riley Zelesnak & Chloe Raghanti fell 3-6 in another competitive match.
Addison & Chloe Smith finished 1-6.
Yaqi Lu & Sam Stanton battled hard, finishing 2-6.
